Virgin Mobile in SA
This comes only days after CellC have officially launched their ‘mobile broadband’ initiative based on EDGE technology.
Currently CellC is lagging behind Vodacom and MTN who are already offerings clients 3G connectivity. Both these companies are also trialing HSDPA which will provide customers with downlink speeds of up to 2 Mbps.
Cell C will be the newcomers in the market but hopefully the partnership with Virgin will give the third cellular operator the added impetus required to penetrate the market and gain a significant portion of the market share.
Number portability is one of the factors which Tallat Laham, Chairman of Cell C, feels will boost the profile of the third cellular operator as reported by ITWeb.
Vodacom is the present cellular broadband leader but this situation could change quickly Cell C are willing to tackle the cellular giant head-on regarding prices and product offerings.
Laham is unable to discuss the new product offerings that Cell C will launch but one thing is certain for any provider entering the market so late in the game it is essential to enter with a bang and the only bang South African consumers are currently interested in is lower prices.
