JSE awards MTN NS 3 year WAN contract

"The JSE’s tender, published in September 2005, requested proposals for the full scope of all wide area networking requirements for the JSE. MTN NS requested to institute a pilot installation to multicast over MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching), a network which offers the client end-to-end converged solutions in the dynamic corporate environment," says Mike Brierley, Managing Director of MTN NS.

An agreement between the JSE and MTN NS was signed on 14 December 2006: "MTN NS’s pilot project was highly effective and resulted in the tender contract being awarded to us. The signing of the agreement is the culmination of a year of testing and hours of hard work from the highly dedicated and professional teams at MTN NS and the JSE, with whom a great working relationship has developed."

The JSE’s Chief Operating Officer, Leanne Parsons, says "As a result of technology improvements and new systems being delivered through project Orion (the JSE’s massive IT systems transformation), the wide area network (WAN) requirements for the exchange and its customers has increased. The networking solution provided by MTN NS is part of the JSE’s commitment to managing the costs, on behalf of our stakeholders, incurred from Orion’s increased functionality and efficiency capability.

"This contract forms part of our recognition that we need to continually innovate and provide new services to our clients in order to remain world-class. We are certain that MTN NS will become an essential partner in the JSE’s broader effort to strengthen our role as a competitive force in the global financial marketplace."

"We are delighted to have been awarded the business from the JSE and would like to thank them for entrusting us with their networking solutions. They run a high-risk business which is completely dependent on access and we are looking forward to providing them with the needed service, 24/7" says Brierley.

"I am confident that MTN NS won the JSE contract because of MTN’s experience in the financial services industry. Our work with I-Net (part of the Johnnic Group) in particular, has benefited us greatly and enabled us to identify issues and deal with them.

"Supplying the JSE with network solutions to meet its networking business needs provides MTN NS with a huge opportunity to develop networking solutions for the financial services arena".

Three phases are covered by the contract between the JSE and MTN NS:

  • Complete Internet Access for the JSE
  • Critical international connectivity between the JSE and LSE (London Stock Exchange)
  • Managed data network connectivity services between the JSE and members – the broker community, that will benefit from direct access to the JSE via the MTN MPLS network, and will also gain access to other MTN corporate products.

Currently, the JSE test environment link, is up and running and product testing is in progress. Implementation of the other phases will start in the first quarter of 2007.
