Top local websites
The Online Publisher’s Association (OPA), which represents many of the larger publishers in South Africa, released their website statistics for the first quarter of 2007 revealing that all the top guns are holding fast to their positions. Biggest Websites
News24 continued its dominance of the local market in 2007 by attracting the most unique browsers in both the local and international arena.
News24 attracted an average of 1 722 041 unique monthly worldwide visitors during Q1 2007, well ahead of IOL with 1 384 223 browsers and MWEB with 711 667.
The rest of the top 10 is completed by webmail.co.za, iafrica.com, health24.co.za, Mail & Guardian Online, fin24.co.za, ananzi.co.za and www.bidorbuy.co.za.
Local Only
When looking at local only visitors the situation looks similar.
News24 still reigns supreme with 822 274 unique browsers, followed by MWEB with 613 492 visitors and IOL with 536 995.
The other top 10 local websites are webmail.co.za, ananzi.co.za, fin24.co.za, iafrica.com, careerjunction.co.za, health24.co.za and mg.co.za.
IT Websites
Most of the top websites are of a general nature focusing on news, email, search, jobs or actuality issues.
One has to scroll down the list to reach the only listed IT related website, ITWeb, which attracted an average of 84 920 total unique visitors, of which 53 215 came from South Africa. IOL Technology came in second with 58 975 unique overall monthly visitors.
MyBroadband.co.za, which is not an OPA member, leads the IT Website list and would fit into the Top 20 according to its Q1 statistics. It attracted an average of 226,678 unique monthly visitors, which would have placed it 19 th on the OPA list.
Amoung IT specific websites MyBroadband.co.za also leads the page views race with an average of 1 860 275 monthly page views during Q1 2007. ITWeb came in second with 403 711 page views and IOL Technology third with 134 635.
There has been a call from smaller publishers for the OPA to extend their current membership base to give a more representative list of local websites, and they are investigating the option of lower joining fees to incorporate smaller publishers in this list.
