Toshiba launches netbook
Toshiba now joins a growing list of hardware makers that are shipping ultra-portable netbooks. The company has announced its NB100 netbook which is available locally for R4999 (Toshiba NB100 netbook image).
The NB100 is built on Intel’s Atom processor and ships with 1GB of memory. Unlike a number of other netbooks on the market which use flash-based drives, the NB100 includes a 120GB SATA hard drive, giving users a healthy dose of storage space.
For connectivity the NB100 include 802.11b/g Wifi, 10/100 Mbps fast Ethernet, and built-in Bluetooth.
The machine includes an 8.9-inch display, the same as the Acer Aspire One, which ought to more than usable for most users on the road. The NB100 also includes an optional USB-powered DVD drive.
The Toshiba NB100 will in most cases ship with Windows XP, as with most other netbooks on the market but, says Reon Coetzee, marketing manager for Toshiba Africa, the NB100 has also been certified to work with Ubuntu Linux for open source fans.
