Telkom hands over 30 laptops and mobile routers to Eastern Cape school
Telkom, in partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Education, has handed over 30 laptops and 30 MiFi devices at the relaunch of the Sitoza Senior Secondary School’s ICT lab in Ngcobo.
The network operator said each device is equipped with preloaded SIM cards and data packages. The lab’s relaunch follows the redevelopment of the school’s campus, unveiled in January 2026.
“The school is widely recognised as one of the province’s shining examples of grit and determination, celebrated for its commitment to academic excellence and consistently strong performance,” it said.
Lerato Motsoeneng, managing executive at Telkom Business, spoke at the handover event. She said South African businesses must play a meaningful role in society.
She explained that Telkom is helping to provide the backbone of South Africa’s digital future through its extensive connectivity footprint, which includes largely underserved parts of the country.
“We believe in the potential of the Fourth Industrial Revolution to unlock significant digital opportunities,” Motsoeneng said.
The network operator has long supported public-private partnerships that fund basic education across South Africa.
It said the broader private sector has invested more than R100 million in initiatives to strengthen learning outcomes in schools since 2020.
Telkom’s Connected Schools programme has delivered ICT resource centres, bursaries, and teaching development training in South Africa.
Judy Vilakazi, head of the Telkom Foundation, said the company is thrilled to be part of Sitoza Senior Secondary School’s new beginning.
“The reality is that we cannot begin to meaningfully talk or plan for future digital workforces without first building digital capability within the education ecosystem,” she said.
Fundile Gade, Eastern Cape MEC for Education, welcomed and thanked Telkom for its support and dedication to equipping students and teachers with digital tools.
“This donation means a great deal to us as a community and as parents,” Malusi Madyolo, chair of the school governing body, said.
“It gives our children access to the tools and skills they need to learn, grow, and build brighter futures.”
Mphathiswa Rhubushe, an ICT teacher at Sitoza Senior Secondary School, expressed his gratitude to Telkom for its support.
“This lab will make a big difference in how we teach and how our learners engage with their studies,” he said.
“Access to technology allows us to introduce new ways of thinking, research, and collaboration. Ultimately, it also helps shape new ways of being and experiencing the world.”
