Amazon launches Prime in South Africa

Amazon.co.za has launched its Amazon Prime subscription in South Africa, offering free and fast delivery, video streaming, and cloud gaming for R59 per month or R399 per year.

Amazon Sub-Saharan Africa managing director, Robert Koen, said the company was thrilled to offer South African customers world-class shopping and entertainment benefits in a single membership.

“Since launching Amazon in South Africa two years ago, we have built a store our customers love, with a great selection of local and international products backed by a reliable delivery experience,” Koen said.

“We are thrilled to offer South African customers world-class shopping and entertainment benefits in a single membership through Amazon Prime.”

At launch, the benefits of the Prime subscription in South Africa include:

  • Free Same-Day and Next-Day Delivery on a wide range of items with no minimum spend.
  • Exclusive access to Prime Day, Amazon’s annual global shopping event.
  • Early access to great deals throughout the year, including Black Friday.
  • Prime Video streaming subscription, previously priced at R79 standalone in South Africa.
  • Amazon Luna Cloud gaming subscription, supporting streaming titles like Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Fortnite
  • Free monthly Twitch channel subscription

The delivery benefit is available for unlimited orders of Prime eligible items across a wide range of categories, including everyday essentials, shoes, electronics, home, sporting gear and kitchen.

Unlimited free same-day delivery is offered on all orders placed before midday in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria with no minimum order spend.

Amazon also announced its first Prime Day promotion in South Africa will run from 23 to 29 June 2026, providing subscribers with exclusive deals and discounts on thousands of items.

Customers can sign up for Prime at www.amazon.co.za/prime for a 30-day free trial and then join for a monthly fee of R59 or an annual fee of R399, working out to a saving of 44%.

Amazon Prime vice president Jamil Ghani said the company had observed first-hand how Prime transformed the way members shop and enjoy entertainment around the world.

“In every new country we’ve launched, Prime has become an indispensable part of members’ daily lives, saving them time and money while connecting them to world-class entertainment,” Ghani said.

“We look forward to delivering disproportionate value when South African customers experience Prime’s convenience, value, and entertainment — and we’re only getting started.”
