Tutu gets caught up in Internet scam

Tutu’s office yesterday distanced itself from an appeal for money by the “Archbishop Emeritus” made to Lancing College, in England.

Tutu’s office said he did not write the awkwardly phrased letter.

A copy in The Times’s possession read: “My main reason for sending you this mail is that I have a problem. I humbly ask for an urgent loan. I promise to give that money back to you on February 2 2009. I ask for £1400 [R21000] ONLY.”

Attached is a fake cheque as assurance the loan will be repaid.

A spokesman for Tutu’s office said the letter had been doing the rounds on the Internet. The only institution mandated to raise funds for Tutu’s organisation was the Mpilo Ministries Trust. — Yazeed Kamaldien
