Budget smartphone

THE LG KT610 is an entry-level smartphone with retro looks and styling on the outside and a QWERTY keyboard and larger screen when flipped open. I must admit to taking an instant dislike to this little device – until I started using it in earnest, which revealed a competent cellphone with some great features.

Though the KT610 does miss some of the features common in smartphones, what it does do, it does very well. There’s no WiFi and a mediocre two-megapixel camera. The screen on the outside of the device is tiny and the other – revealed when the phone is flipped open – could have been a good deal larger than it is. Its battery life is sub-standard.

But the KT610 does have super-fast 3G with HSDPA connectivity, a built-in GPS and runs the latest version of the Symbian operating system, which is stable and has many third-party applications available. Its build quality is great and the QWERTY keyboard is comfortable for typing.

I also like the approach of having a regular cellphone with standard keypad available when you’re just making and receiving calls, with a full QWERTY keyboard that can be accessed when you need to send an email or SMS and browse the web. It also means the KT610 can be used with one hand.

There’s no GPS software installed for navigation, so you’d have to buy a product such as Garmin Mobile XT to use with the KT610 if you need that function. It also doesn’t geotag photos taken with the phone (save the location in which a picture is taken). But the GPS is very good when used with third-party navigation software.

The best thing about the KT610 is its price, offering an affordable smartphone with great functionality that won’t break the bank. You’d be hard pressed to find anything better for R3 999.
