Neotel’s data centre plans
Neotel recently revealed that it was constructing two state of the art data centres – one in Midrand, Gauteng and one in Diep River, Cape Town. The initial capacity of the Johannesburg and Cape Town data centres will be 1000 square metres, but they can scale to 6000 and 3000 square metres respectively.
One of the biggest issues when it comes to data centres in South Africa is the supply of adequate electricity, and this is one area where Neotel is confident it will trump all its competitors. According to Rajeev Sinha, head of products at Neotel, the new data centres will have sufficient electricity to supply their clients with 5.4kW of power per rack – higher than any other hosting provider in South Africa.
According to Sinha, the new Neotel data centres have ample connectivity – in the Gbps range or even Tbps if needed. The new Neotel data centres are built on N+N redundancy in areas of critical importance and N+1 in non-critical departments, something that also holds for connectivity to ensure that there is no single point of failure.
One of the biggest value propositions of the Neotel data centres is that it will form part of the global Tata data centre network. This provides Neotel with the ability to leverage of this global network in various ways, including additional redundancy, backups and skills sharing.
Neotel is also planning to incorporate a full Content Distribution Network (CDN) which will form part of Tata’s global CDN network. This can significantly increase the performance of websites, especially if the traffic comes from various regions worldwide.
The local data centre environment is becoming increasingly competitive with more traditional players such as Internet Solutions, Verizon Business (not MTN), MTN Network Solutions and Telkom having to face competition from new entrants like Neotel, Vodacom Business and Teraco.
