Speaking Phone for the Blind
Vodacom has announced the launch of the Nokia 6210 Navigator Speaking Phone., aimed at customers who are partially sighted or blind.
“In 2004 Vodacom became the first operator in South Africa to increase accessibility to cellular communication products and services in line with our Specific Needs Initiative,” says Dot Field, Chief Communications Officer of the Vodacom Group.
“We are determined to continue pioneering the latest developments in products that could enhance the independence, accessibility and mobility of our customers with disabilities”, Field says.
Text-to-speech software is loaded onto compatible Vodacom Speaking Phones that converts the information displayed on the cellphone screen to speech, including menus, text messages and contacts.
The Talks software enables the user to customise their handset according to personal preferences such as selecting a ringtone for calls and messages. A blind user can also check important information such as the phone’s battery status, signal strength as well as date and time. A further benefit of the Talks software is that the user can adjust the rate of speech, adjust the volume and the pitch of the voice.
A further benefit to blind users is that the 6210 Navigator’s ‘Talks’ button is situated on the front main panel of the cellphone, which makes it easy to find and navigate. Further features of the 6210 Navigator slide cellphone include a built-in Stereo FM Radio and email.
Speaking phones are available to all Vodacom Contract, Top Up and Prepaid customers at participating Vodacom approved outlets.
