Laptop bundles from iBurst
iBurst has created a set of bundles that package Internet connectivity with notebook computers in what the company describes as its “drive to make the Internet more accessible and affordable to local consumers.”
The bundles include an Acer Extensa Notebook, a modem, a laptop bag and a 3 year extended hardware warranty on the notebook. The bundles are available on selected iBurst Wireless & HSDPA packages on a 36-month contract.
For R494 a month on a 36-month contract, subscribers can opt for a notebook bundle featuring an iBurst Wireless connection with 500MB of bandwidth. For R488 per month on a 36-month contract, subscribers can get HSDPA connectivity with 250MB of bandwidth.
The Acer Extensa comes with a 15.4″ WXGA high-brightness TFT LCD screen, an Intel Pentium dual-core mobile processor, the Mobile Intel GL40 Express Chipset and up to 2 GB of RAM.
Says Steve Briggs, iBurst’s Executive Head of Commercial: “Poor Internet and broadband adoption in South Africa is partly due to the low penetration of PCs in the market. Through these affordable notebook offerings, we hope to bring the Internet within reach of more people and grow the country’s population of broadband users. The packages allow anyone within HSDPA or iBurst Wireless coverage to quickly and easily start enjoying the benefits of fast and reliable Internet access.”
When looking at the individual components, a 500 MB iBurst wireless bundle and an Acer Extensa Notebook, the total cost is R 14 484. This includes the once off laptop cost of R 8 400 and the monthly 500 MB iBurst subscription at R 169 per month for the first 24 months and R 149 for the next 12 months.
When signing up for the 36 month 500 MB iBurst laptop bundle at a monthly price of R 494 the total cost is R 17 784. This comprises of a R 165 monthly iBurst wireless fee and a R 329 monthly laptop repayment.
According to Briggs the additional costs can be attributed to the fact that iBurst amortises the upfront modem hardware costs over the subscription period. “The difference essentially reflects the higher cost of funding and risk for the longer period,” said Briggs.
