Telkom deal in sight
Striking Telkom workers were feeling positive about the telecommunications company’s latest pay offer, raising hopes on Friday of an imminent settlement.
“We are very positive about it,” said Pheane Ramaodi, spokesman for the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) which has been trying to broker a better pay deal for its members working for the company.
CWU leadership would consult members at around 10;00 on Friday on the latest offer, and would then proceed to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in Johannesburg at noon for further talks with the company, facilitated by the dispute resolution body.
Many Telkom workers have been on strike since August 3, demanding a 13% wage increase and the adjustment of what they perceive as “racially classified” salary grades.
Their campaign has included a march from the Union Buildings to Pretoria on Wednesday, and picketing outside the CCMA.
The union did not elaborate on the latest offer, abiding by their practice of informing members first before making the information public, but the last reported offer was an eight percent increase.
Telkom confirmed it would meet union representatives later on Friday.
