Latest salary trends revealed

Wage fluctuations are putting great pressure on business executives and HR professionals who conduct business in South Africa, according to the latest CareerJunction Index salary analysis.

“The continuous wage fluctuations taking place under the current economic climate means that businesses need to budget more carefully and responsibly,” says Kris Jarzebowski, CEO of CareerJunction. “It is critical for businesses to understand local trends and adjust their methods accordingly, in particular with regards to employment remuneration.”

Understanding market related trends can greatly aid employers in retaining their staff and avoid losing valuable employees over small indifferences.  “South Africa is currently facing significant skill shortages and employers should be looking at all means to retain good staff.”

Jarzebowski also stressed the importance of career seekers to identify market related salary packages in order to obtain a realistic approach to financial satisfaction under the current economic climate.

“Professionals often get lured away from good positions by attractive salaries; however these salaries very often stay unchanged for years. Hence career seekers should look for positions where they have opportunities to develop their careers, train, and grow.”

The latest findings by CareerJunction reveal a significant variation of salaries offered across all provinces in South Africa. On analysis of the average salary offered in each province, findings indicate that professionals working in the Northern Cape earn nearly 25% more than the average professional in other regions.

Mining activity in the Northern Cape region greatly contributes to the significant wage fluctuation as a large percentage of job offerings are allocated to highly skilled professionals in the mining sector who earn lofty salaries.

Petrochemical and Business & Management professionals also earn salaries that are substantially greater than those earned by professionals working in other industries around the country; hence these industries, along with the Mining industry are currently considered to be the highest paid industries in South Africa.

The table below illustrates the differentiation of salary levels across all provinces if the national average for a specific position was R 10 000.

North West R8 264.91
Eastern Cape R8 453.19
KwaZulu-Natal R8 720.49
Western Cape R9 027.81
Free State R9 330.68
Limpopo R9 945.89
Mpumalanga R10 543.31
Gauteng R11 109.89
Northern Cape R13 497.59

Jarzebowski further encourages employers as well as employees to take the right approach to wage increases and promotion techniques.

“It is very important for employers and their staff to understand the different skill levels and the various wage categories involved. Promoting staff prematurely can have devastating effects on a business. With bigger titles come higher salary rights on the job market, but the demand and responsibility increases equally so,” says Jarzebowski.
