Firefox continues to see strong growth

September saw Mozilla’s Firefox gather a sizable portion of the global browser market reports Net Applications, a well known online web metrics firm.

Figures show that during September Firefox 3.5 grew their market share by 4%. Since its release in April this year the most recent iteration of the Firefox browser has managed to capture 12.65% of the global market, growing by over 50% month on month for August and September thanks to early adopters.

Firefox 3.5’s strong growth has served to bring the global Mozilla Firefox market share to 23.75% – a number which has been steadily increasing since April.

Overall Firefox is in second place behind Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE), which currently holds 65.71% of the market. IE has been steadily decreasing, dropping from 71.61% since November 2008.

Microsoft includes the browser as part of its Windows package as an embedded program. This means that users cannot uninstall the program; a factor which has allowed Microsoft to capture a large portion of the casual PC market.

Another rising force within the browser market is Google’s Chrome, which currently holds 3.17% of the market. The browser, which employs the WebKit layout engine, has been pinned as one of the fastest on the market in terms of page loads and is certainly one the lightest in terms of processing load.

Despite this Chrome has yet to make a significant impact on the market. Firefox however, is gaining ground steadily and could pose a threat towards Microsoft’s market dominance within the coming years.
