Telkom DSL Key Performance Indicators
ICASA published its ADSL Regulations in August 2006, but to this day the regulations are largely ignored by most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in South Africa. Telkom is however the exception, and has for the most part implemented the regulations – albeit its own interpretation of how it should be done.
Telkom has previously published that the contention ratio for ADSL is 20:1, and has recently released its key ADSL performance indicators (KPI) comprising of Packet Losses, Average Latency and Jitter.
According to Telkom’s KPI Report for July to September 2009 the Average International Packet Loss percentage was 0.017, down from 0.028 over the preceding three months. The ‘Average International Round-trip latency’ was 283 ms for July to September, slightly better than the 292 ms for April to June 2009.
When it came to local KPIs the Average National Packet Loss percentage over the last three months was 0.25%, significantly lower than the April to June figure of 2.9%. The Average National Round-trip latency of 14.79 ms was also better than the 16.1 ms for the preceding three months.
