Bundled ADSL packages: who has the best deal?
Over the last few months ADSL data prices started plummeting, partly because of lower international bandwidth pricing due to SEACOM’s entrance into the local telecoms market. Usage based ADSL data prices are now as low as R14 per Gigabyte while uncapped ADSL accounts start at R300 per month.
ADSL access and analogue line rental rates however have stayed the same over the last three years, something which means that there has not been a significant move in the total cost of ownership for entry level ADSL subscribers. While many consumers and industry players expected Telkom to cut ADSL rates in 2009/2010, this has not happened.
Telkom is however not alone in this trend. According to the latest Point Topic Broadband Tariff Benchmarks report which tracks broadband prices across the world, operators have been raising the price of their entry level services they offer in the last few months – particularly for DSL.
It is however heartening to see that there have been some price reductions in the local ‘bundled DSL 384’ market despite the global trend of price hikes for low-end offerings. These price reductions typically came from mid-sized Internet Service Providers battling it out in the low end ADSL market.
This begs the question which ISPs offer the best deals for ‘one price’ DSL 384 services. The following table provides some of the most prominent bundled DSL 384 deals available in the South African market. It should be noted that an analogue line rental of R130 per month is paid directly to Telkom, and that ISPs cannot compete on price with this component.
