Most expensive ADSL offerings

Over the last few months there has been a massive reduction in ADSL data prices, with some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) cutting their data bundle prices by 70% or more.  This means that knowledgeable ADSL users have never had it so good with a plethora of capped and uncapped offerings to choose from, starting from as low as R14 per GB.

There are however many ADSL subscribers who are not particularly tech savvy, and they will typically just use the first service provider they found.  In most cases this means Telkom Internet or MWEB, but some consumers have it far worse than the ‘vanilla’ pricing of the large consumer ISPs.

Below are five of the more expensive ADSL service providers in South Africa – all charging R90 or more per GB for ADSL data.  It should be noted that this is a fairly random list compiled from feedback from the MyBroadband community, and the pricing is taken directly from the company websites which may be outdated in some cases.

What is particularly interesting is that some of the providers listed below charge a setup fee of between R100 and R350 for the privilege of using their services.  There is typically no setup fee associated with ADSL data bundles, which raises serious questions about the business models of some of the ISPs in the local market.

ADSL price per GB
Company Usage Allowance Price/GB
Inloco 1 GB R181.50
Altonet 1 GB R100
Halo Communications 1 GB R99
Diamatrix 1 GB R90
