Telkom ADSL Performance Conundrum
August 2007 ADSL KPI
Telkom recently released their August 2007 Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for their ADSL service.
The ICASA ADSL regulations call for Telkom, Neotel and ISPs to publish, on a quarterly basis, KPIs of at least packet loss, average latency and jitter for an ADSL product.
According to the information on the Telkom website the latest KPI Stats were captured from 2007/07/03 10:44 to 2007/07/04 10:44.
These statistics show an average international packet loss of 4.07%, peaking at 57.67%. Local packet loss was recorded as 0.03%, peaking at 2.42%.
The average international latency was recorded as 290.57 ms while the average local latency is given as 13.84 ms. The average jitter according to Telkom is 3.68.
Suspicious results
Telkom released its first set of ADSL performance indicators earlier this year and stated that the statistics were captured for the period 2007/02/12 15:00 to 2007/02/13 15:00.
Unfortunately the only thing that initially differed with the two sets of statistics were the dates, otherwise the figures were exactly the same for both periods.
The fact that the February and August 2007 statistics are exactly the same – to the second decimal number no less – raises very serious questions as to the accuracy of these results and what the actual KPIs are.
It is further interesting to note that the February 2007 statistics, which were published a few months earlier on the Telkom website, have now been altered – or at least a new set of results were released – which reflects different values.
The initial February 2007 KPI PDF document was created in mid July 2007 which indicates that the latest statistics, claimed to be for August 2007, could not possibly have been for this period.
All three sets of results – namely the initial February 2007 results, the new February 2007 results and the August 2007 results – are given in original format here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=93217
