ADSL Top-Up

Telkom Internet recently launched their ADSL Top-Up products which allow subscribers to purchase additional bandwidth after being capped. Telkom charges R 64.76 per GB for standard shaped SAIX bandwidth and R 113.34 per GB for unshaped bandwidth. Local bandwidth retails for R 25.55 per GB.

Axxess – a local ISP that has become well known for their ADSL prepaid bandwidth products – allows subscribers to top-up for R 59.00 per GB for shaped SAIX bandwidth and R 99.00 per month for unshaped bandwidth.

The bandwidth from these accounts expires at the end of the month which is a similar scenario to TelkomInternet’s top-up products. Axxess do however offer bandwidth rollover products at a slightly higher rate.

Web Africa, voted ISP of the Year in 2007, also has a top-up facility at R 70.00 per GB. They however do not make any distinction between expiring and non-expiring bandwidth which explains the higher charge. Unshaped bandwidth from Web Africa costs R 125.00 per GB.

Cybersmart, an ISP which has opted to charge for bandwidth according to access speed, offers a 3 GB top-up account to their DSL 384 subscribers at R 189.00 per month, and their tariffs increase to R 259.00 for DSL 4 Mbps users. Unshaped bandwidth starts at R 99.00 per GB for DSL 384 customers and goes up to R 111.00 for DSL 4 Mbps users.

Local only bandwidth

For local top-up bandwidth Axxess charges R 15.00 per GB on a monthly basis and R 17.00 per GB for pre-paid bandwidth. Web Africa charges R 19.00 per GB.

Cybersmart recently launched their CapExtender product where DSL 384 subscribers can purchase 3 GB of local SAIX bandwidth at R 35.00 per month and 20 GB of local bandwidth at R 74.00 per month.

It should however be noted that Internet Solutions’ clients generally receive free local bandwidth up to 30 GB with any standard per GB ADSL account purchased.

TelkomInternet subscribers also receive free local bandwidth – ranging between 10 GB and 40 GB depending on their account type – with their standard ADSL accounts.
