Cable theft to blame for ADSL problems
ADSL users across the country complained about slow throughput and related problems on their ADSL services on Monday.
Initial indications were that international network failure in Asia caused these problems, but Telkom highlighted that this was only part of the problem.
According to official Telkom feedback international ADSL capacity was reduced by a third due to a network failure which occurred in Malaysia on 1 February 2008.
This situation was further exacerbated when one of the remaining 2 links was damaged by a cable theft incident in the Delmas area at 03:11, the morning of 4 February 2008.
Telkom said that their surveillance personnel identified and located the break and dispatched a technical team to repair the broken links. The repair was completed at 10:33 on the same day.
The company pointed out that all SAIX based ADSL users were affected by high congestion and slow responses during this period.
Most ADSL users reported that their service levels are basically back to normal.
