ADSL speed upgrade soon
Telkom has conducted successful increased uplink speeds of 640 Kbps on its 4Mbps ADSL service. While the results were encouraging, the company decided to only upgrade customers to 512Kbps uplink speeds to ensure that its backhaul network was not put under strain.
Telkom said that completion of the increased uplink speed to all 4Mbps ADSL clients was anticipated by the end of June 2008. This will be an automatic upgrade with no additional cost to subscribers.
Telkom has also confirmed that it has performed live testing of an 8Mbps ADSL service on its network “to determine the impact on the stability of our copper network when pushing the technology to its maximum”.
The company, however, pointed out that no official trials had been run and that there were currently no immediate plans for rolling out faster ADSL services.
The ADSL provider said, however, that both CPE (customer premises equipment) devices and DSLAM equipment that support ADSL2+ were being deployed and rolled out at present.
“There is, however, no product-specific development and/or testing scheduled at this stage,” said Nabintu Petsana, Telkom’s acting group executive for corporate communication.
