High usage ADSL accounts getting cheaper

Neotel’s launch of their 10GB, 15GB and uncapped NeoConnect Prime offerings signaled a change in the local Internet market where user may no longer be content with very low monthly usage limits.

Currently most large ISPs still punt 1GB, 2GB and 3GB monthly accounts, but there is an increase in more affordable higher-usage ADSL accounts.

Local accounts with 10 GB or higher bandwidth allowances have been available for some time already, with SAOL’s “ADSL 384k 1Gig All-in-1 with 20Gig Local” offering for R138 per month leading the value-for-money drive.

More recently accounts allowing for higher international traffic are also starting emerging.

OpenWeb has launched what it calls “the lowest cost 10GB international account in South Africa”:  a 512k VPN-based product allowing for 10GB of international traffic at R349 a month.

“The account allows for both local and international ADSL bandwidth, running over a VPN connection to the OpenWeb backbone. The bandwidth is unshaped and allows access to P2P and torrents,” the company says.

SAOL’s one-price static IP service which includes DSL384 access and 15GB of unshaped monthly traffic for R499 is also popular among users willing to compromise on speed in preference of a higher monthly cap.
