All-inclusive ADSL prices start to plummet

Telkom has recently announced that they will cut the price of their Do Broadband Level 1 package in August from R 279-00 per month to R 199-00 per month. This service includes the DSL 384 access charge and carries a 1 GB monthly usage allowance.
Despite the small margins associated with this service, various ISPs followed suit and are now undercutting Telkom.
MWEB, one of the first large ISPs to introduce a special offer taking advantage of the new pricing, are retailing their ‘all inclusive ADSL service up to 384K’ for R179-00 per month.
The price of R 179-00 is applicable for the first six months and – like Telkom’s offer – includes the DSL 384 access charge and a 1 GB monthly usage allowance. The price thereafter is R 219-00 per month.
The R 179-00 special offer from MWEB is only available to subscribers who sign a 12 month contract, which means that the total cost for the service for the full contract period is R 2388-00 or an average of R 199-00 per month.
This is exactly the same as what Telkom charges for their Do Broadband Level 1 product which also offers a 1 GB usage allowance on a DSL 384 connection.
The lowest of them all?
Not to be outdone, Cybersmart launched a similar product – which includes the 384 DSL circuit plus 1 GB of usage – for R 169-00 per month. This service comes with a free 4 port router supplied by Cybersmart and no contract term is required to qualify for this offer.
This R 169-00 all-inclusive price from Cybersmart is significantly less than the current R 245-00 for the DSL 384 access portion alone and close to the reduced rate of R152-00 per month which will kick in beginning of August.
The benefits of easy-to-understand, single-price ADSL services are starting to emerge, and despite the problems regarding low usage limits, it is encouraging news that the price for ADSL has finally reached the sub-R 200-00 level.
