Vodacom exceeds million broadband mark
Over the last few years Vodacom has shown strong growth in the broadband market, overtaking Telkom in 2008 as the company with the most high speed data subscribers. This strong growth is continuing, and Vodacom has recently surpassed the 1 million broadband subscriber mark.
Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys recently revealed that Vodacom had just over 1 million broadband data bundle users at the end of 2009. 660,000 were ‘pure data card’ users while the remaining group typically used their phone as a tethered modem or used an alternative SIM based device to connect to Vodacom’s HSDPA network.
Uys also announced that Vodacom is set to bump up all their current broadband subscribers to 7.2 Mbps at the end of March. The Vodacom CEO added that Vodacom has switched on its 21 Mbps HSPA+ network in Midrand – the first live HSPA+ network in Africa. This service will however not be available immediately, but Uys said that 21 Mbps HSPA+ will be rolled out in areas like the World Cup stadiums and airports “where it makes sense”.
Telkom announced towards the end of last year that it had 602 720 ADSL subscribers while iBurst has around 80 000 Wireless subscribers. MTN does not disclose its broadband subscriber numbers.
