Telkom forging ahead with WiMax rollout
Telkom today announced that their ADSL subscriber numbers grew to 255 633, a 78% increase over last year’s numbers.
The company is planning to increase its ADSL subscriber base to 420 000 for the year ending March 31 2008, but is not only banking on ADSL in the broadband space.
Telkom pointed out that they have a ‘holistic wire-line and wireless approach to broadband’, and with WiMax spectrum already allocated to them they are starting to use this wireless technology to bring broadband to consumers who can not get ADSL.
“To complement its ADSL roll-out countrywide, Telkom has successfully trialed WiMAX.14 sites with base stations are currently operational in Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban,” Telkom said.
Telkom is planning a further 57 WiMax sites which will be built countrywide.
Currently Telkom, Neotel, Sentech and iBurst have WiMax spectrum, with many other telecoms players like MWEB, Internet Solutions and Altech hoping to be allocated spectrum by ICASA to join the WiMax race.
MWEB recently launched their WiMax trials in Gauteng and Cape Town while Neotel indicated that they are looking to launch WiMax broadband services by the end of the year.
