Broadband gains replace fixed-line losses

Deutsche Telekom now has 9.02 million broadband customers, the group said.

US operations have also expanded, with the German company winning 951 000 clients there last to to boost its customer base to 28.685 million.

In Germany, Deutsche Telekom added 1.48 million new mobile telephone users, bringing the total to 35.95 million.

Fixed-line service was the main loser, with the loss of 2.1 million customers coming on top of a similar number in 2006.

The trend was expected to continue this year, Deutsche Telekom boss Rene Obermann advised.

"We will continue to lose clients to competitors," Obermann acknowledged.

He added, however, that Deutsche Telekom still held around 80 percent of the fixed-line market in Germany.
