Vodacom to launch WiMax before the end of the year
Vodacom will start building a WiMax network on behalf of WBS, using their 2.5 GHz spectrum, and launch commercial broadband and corporate services over this network before the end of the year.
Pieter Uys, Vodacom’s Chief Operating Officer, said that they see WiMax as a technology which can provide them with additional capacity and spectrum to offer users high speed Internet access.
According to Uys, spectrum will always be a restraining factor in providing users with high speed access in the wireless broadband arena, and that WiMax is a welcome addition to their current 3G-HSDPA technology.
Uys said that Vodacom sees WiMax as a great ADSL replacement technology and has confidence that it will serve the needs of the company well in the access space.
Neotel has recently announced that they are also looking towards the end of 2007 for a commercial launch of their WiMax based ‘true broadband’ offerings.
This is in addition to Telkom who launch their commercial WiMax services this week. Telkom will be offering a 512 Kbps WiMax service with similar pricing and usage limits as their Do Broadband offerings.
MWEB recently started their WiMax trials in both Gauteng and Cape Town, and plans to have 1000 active trial users on their WiMax network to test the service.
