Telkom to launch commercial WiMAX products
“Telkom continues to extend value to its customers by becoming the first operator in South Africa to commercially launch products based on WiMAX. The launch, scheduled for this week is set to enhance the broadband footprint, increase broadband revenue and retain & grow the broadband market,” the company said.
According to Telkom their WiMAX product offerings compliment the recently launched Do Broadband service offering by expanding the Company’s broadband footprint.
“Customers who apply for DSL will be offered Do Broadband Wireless if they reside in an area which is not DSL enabled and that falls within the coverage area of a WiMax base station,” Telkom said.
The WiMAX product suite has been aligned with the Company’s Do Broadband branding and will be available at an access speed of up to 512Kbps with a choice of a 1GB, 2GB or 3GB account.
Customers will apply for WiMAX access with Telkom, but will have the option of choosing between Telkom’s ISP or any other Internet Service Provider (ISP) that supports WiMAX.
The product suite will be targeted at customers who do not have access to DSL, thereby complimenting the Company’s existing broadband footprint by providing high speed Internet access to more people.
Later phases of the WiMAX service offerings will include voice enabled services to the same market.
The product offerings are as follows:
- WiMAX up to 512Kbps (stand alone access) for R240 per month.
- Do Broadband Wireless Level 1 consisting of WiMAX up to 512Kbps access plus Telkom Internet 1GB for R319 per month
- Do Broadband Wireless Level 2 consisting of WiMAX up to 512Kbps access plus Telkom Internet 2GB for R389 per month
- Do Broadband Wireless Level 3 consisting of WiMAX up to 512Kbps access plus TelkomInternet 3GB for R479 per month.
- Access installation for R 490-00
Ntoele emphasised that customers will only be offered WiMAX as an alternative option if they reside within the WiMAX footprint.
The product suite will initially be available in the Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town areas and will later be extended to some of the following areas; Bloemfontein, Kimberely, Port Elizabeth, East London, Polokwane, Middleburg, Pietermaritzburg, Nelspruit, Welkom and Empangeni.
