Telkom invests in 3G, CDMA, BPL, iBurst
Telkom is investing in various technologies, including 3G WCDMA, WiMax, CDMA, iBurst and Broadband over Power Lines, to serve its local and international broadband needs.
In South Africa, Telkom is still the leading broadband provider and ADSL is their primary means of providing broadband services. But they have already rolled out WiMax in some parts of the country to supplement their ADSL network.
Telkom is further planning to roll out a mobile broadband network, using WCDMA (3G/HSDPA). This forms part of Telkom’s mobile strategy where the company is expanding its current fixed line operations.
International
Internationally Telkom is using a variety of other technologies to bring services to consumers which includes iBurst, Broadband over Power Lines and CDMA.
In Nigeria Telkom is investing in a CDMA mobile network. The company said that the technology provides a ‘vastly superior data capacity’ and a very reliable Internet experience.
Africa Online head John Josephs said that Telkom and Africa Online are pioneering affordable broadband technology (InfiNet) in Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania.
Josephs said that the company is trialing Broadband over Power Lines in Cote d'Ivoire and the results are encouraging. Here the target market is mainly the hotel industry and Josephs said that Africa Online plans a commercial broadband rollout in the next financial year.
Josephs further said that Africa Online is using iBurst for its wireless broadband rollout in partnership with Kyocera.
