The best and worst Internet providers

A recent survey conducted on MyBroadband sheds some light on how consumers view the country’s largest Internet service providers (ISP).

The survey involved an online questionnaire where 200 tech-savvy consumers were asked to rate the country’s largest telecoms providers and first tier ISPs based on their perception of the company.

This ISP survey also included all the major telecoms providers – Telkom, Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Sentech – as all these companies are also acting as Internet providers.

The mobile providers reigned supreme, followed by traditional first tier ISPs and newcomer Neotel.  iBurst and Sentech scored significantly lower than the other providers.

The full results are as follows:

  1. Vodacom (7.1)
  2. MTN (6.8)
  3. Internet Solutions (6.5)
  4. Neotel (6.0)
  5. MWeb (5.3)
  6. Vox Telecom (5.2)
  7. Cell C (4.3)
  8. Telkom (4.3)
  9. iBurst (3.3)
  10. Sentech (2.9)

These results were in line with an accompanying survey where consumers were asked to rank South Africa’s telecoms providers. In this survey Vodacom and MTN were ranked the highest and iBurst and Sentech again occupied the lowest positions.

MyBroadband founder, Rudolph Muller, said that while the survey gives only a snapshot of consumer perception, it should serve to shed some light on how knowledgeable consumers view the main players in the local telecoms market.
