Telkom reveals HSDPA prices
Telkom recently started trialling its mobile data service based on based on W-CDMA technology, the same wireless technology used by Vodacom and MTN for their HSDPA offerings (Telkom Do 3G on the Move advertisement here).
Telkom’s nomadic data service, Do 3G on the Move, “is a fixed-mobile service where users gain access to the Internet with a 3G modem or USB dongle and a computer. Telkom’s offering includes the latest high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) and high-speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) features”.
Telkom is also planning other services in its W-CDMA stable. This includes a fixed voice service and a nomadic voice service planned for later this year.
Telkom currently has a well-established W-CDMA network in Gauteng. Other metropolitan areas that will be covered over the next couple of months include Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London.
Pricing
Telkom has undercut Vodacom and MTN by between 10% and 25%, depending on the type of package. While the in-bundle pricing is cheaper than both MTN and Vodacom, it is not as aggressive as many industry observers expected.
Telkom’s out-of-bundle rate of 30c per MB is, however, significantly cheaper than both MTN and Vodacom where out-of-bundle data rates vary from R1.20 per MB to R2 per MB.
Telkom Do 3G on the Move subscribers have the option of a Huawei E220 Dongle at R1 539 or a Huawei E960 Gateway priced at R2 821.50.
