Dial-up is dead
World Wide Worx MD Arthur Goldstuck recently unveiled the Cisco Internet Access in South Africa 2008 report. This report addressed various aspects of Internet access in South Africa, including the rapid decline of dial-up access in the country.
According to Goldstuck’s research the number of dial-up connections peaked at 1 088 000 in 2004, but had started to decline to its current level of 700 000 connections. Goldstuck predicted a rapid decline in dial-up over the next few years until it effectively disappeared in around five year’s time.
“Dial-up at the end of its life,” Goldstuck said, indicating that wireless and ADSL connections were taking over as the primary source of Internet access in South Africa.
There are currently more than 1.3 million broadband subscriptions in South Africa, made up mainly of Vodacom and MTN HSDPA users, ADSL subscribers and iBurst clients.
