Most wanted IT professionals revealed
The latest CareerJunction Index (CJI) report was released recently, giving a snapshot of the local online job market. The CareerJunction Index represents the online labour dynamics in South Africa by providing a detailed analysis of the relative ratio of supply and demand in the online job market. The CJI is based on comprehensive data gathered from the CareerJunction website.

“The largest volumes of available supply are found in the Finance and Information Technology sectors, followed by the Manufacturing, Production & Trades and Admin, Office & Support sectors,” the CJI report states. This however does not mean that it is easy to find skilled IT professionals.
Engineering and Information Technology remains the two most difficult fields to recruit skilled staff, with less than 8 potential career seekers per job advert advertised. This is multiple times lower than fields like government, education and social & community jobs where there are typically between 80 and 105 job applications per position.
“The pool of potential career seekers in the Finance and Information Technology sectors has been growing significantly over the last 12 months: The Information Technology sector grew by 19.6%,” states the report. The number of IT job adverts increased from 4042 to 4092 over the last year.
The Telecommunication and Engineering industries have however shown a continuous declining trend in online labour demand since the end of 2008. This trend was interrupted during March and April 2009, but both industries experienced an overall drop in online hiring activity by at least 40% since October 2008. The Information Technology industry displayed a similar trend, but has over the last few months showed some stabilisation.

The latest CJI further reveals which IT professionals are the most difficult to recruit. According to the report Business Analysts are the most difficult to find, with just over 4 potential career seekers per job advert. Development and software professionals are also in high demand with less than 10 applicants per position.
Software Testing and Systems & Network Administration professionals were fairly easy to recruit, while Database Administrators, IT Researchers, IT Managers and Web & Internet specialists were very easy to find.
The occupational field that sees the most demand is Development & Software, with close to 60% of all IT job adverts posted falling into this category. System & Network Administration professionals ranked second with Business Analysts coming in third.
