SABC ups its offer

The 10 percent was authorised by the SABC’s interim board, which had previously withdrawn the same offer citing a desire for more research into the broadcaster’s accounts.

Communication Workers’ Union general secretary Gallant Roberts rejected the 10 percent offer.

“It’s not acceptable,” said Roberts.

“Our members are adamant they will not receive anything less than the 12.2 percent as agreed up [with SABC management] in 2008.”

The Broadcasting, Electronic Media and Allied Workers’ Union said on Thursday it would accept the offer, so long as it included further discussions for the 12.2 percent increase at a later time.

On Wednesday, the Media Workers Association of SA general secretary Ernest Dlamini said his members might consider a 10 percent increase.

The SABC’s statement said unions were due to respond to the offer on Monday or Tuesday.
