Samsung handset incompatible with Windows 7
Mobile manufacturer Samsung has confirmed that it has been experiencing problems with Windows 7 compatibility for one of its mobile devices.
According to the local arm of the company – Samsung Electronics South Africa – the Pixon 8, which was released in April 2009, is not currently compatible with Microsoft’s new operating system. This is despite the fact that Windows 7 has been available since October 2009.
According to a Samsung representative the fault can be attributed to the market segment to which Windows 7 was aiming.
“Windows 7 was launched to market in October 2009, aimed at the smartphone market, and as a result, the software for Window 7 is not available for the Pixon 8, a Multimedia handset.”
The Samsung Pixon 8, also referred to as the M8800, features a 3.2 inch TFT resistive touchscreen, 7.2Mbps HSDPA support and an 8 Megapixel camera among other features.
The Samsung PC studio suite, which is currently incompatible with Windows 7, offers users the ability to sync the M8800 with their computers as well as transfer data to the phone’s storage facility. For a device intended for multimedia usage the inability to sync with other devices would arguably frustrate users who were not made aware of the problem beforehand.
At the time of publication Samsung Electronics South Africa was unable to supply information about how or if dissatisfied M8800 owners could return their handsets.
The company ensured customers that it will be releasing a patch to rectify the problem in February and ensures that “Samsung’s new fleet of units will be compatible with the Windows 7 Operating System”.
