Intel and Nokia launch mobile OS
Nokia and Intel today announced that the two companies would be releasing a new open source mobile operating system called MeeGo, which is set to become available in the second quarter of 2010.
MeeGo, which will comprise of a combination of Mobile and Maemo and will be based on a Linux architecture, is set to become available for mobile phones and netbooks in Q2 2010.
According to the operating system’s official website, launched today, MeeGo will redefine how developers relate to open sounrce operating systems.
“MeeGo blends the best of Moblin with the best of Maemo, to create a platform for multiple hardware architectures covering the broadest range of device segments. MeeGo builds upon the Moblin core software platform and reference user experiences, adding the Qt UI toolkit from Maemo.”
“MeeGo is an open source project hosted by the Linux Foundation that encourages community contributions in accordance with the best practices of the open source development model.”
With regards to ARM support the operating system’s official website revealed that “MeeGo is a multi-platform project supporting the Intel/Atom and ARM architectures. As in any open source project, the community can choose the architecture direction and port the project to additional architectures.”
