R 69 for Unlimited email and Internet
According to the Vodacom website “Vodacom is also proud to offer you the most attractive BlackBerry tariff options. Bolt on to your existing Vodacom contract for only R69 and enjoy unlimited usage of email and the Internet from your BlackBerry device.”
All purchases of GPS-enabled BlackBerry smartphones – notably the Blackberry Curve 8310 – will include a free 24-month subscription to Vodafone Sat Nav, for turn-by-turn, voice-promoted GPS navigation according to Vodacom.
The new Blackberry devices come with features such as GPS, cameras, media players, and Internet browsing. This has become a popular phone for business people, predominantly because of its well established email-on-the-move capabilities.
Flat rated
Vodacom confirmed that this is indeed a flat rated, unrestricted Internet and email service using a separate zero-rated APN (Access Point Name).
It is however not a new service all that changed was the price. Previously the service cost R 139-00 per month and it has now been reduced to R 69-00 per month.
Flat rated mobile Internet is not uncommon in the developed world, but there are usually restrictions attached to these ‘uncapped’ services. Examples of typical restrictions are only being able to use the service on the mobile device itself and a fair usage policy of 1 GB of data usage per month.
The Blackberry devices, including the new Blackberry Curve 8310 and BlackBerry Pearl 8100, do not have 3G/HSDPA capabilities and generally make use of the GPRS/EDGE network.
Many of the new Blackberry devices can however be used as a wireless modem for your laptop which can be helpful if you need to upload or download large files, something which may make the flat-rated data service even more compelling for consumers.
The three devices available though Vodacom, namely the BlackBerry 8800, BlackBerry Pearl 8100 and the BlackBerry Curve 8300 smartphones, can all double up as wireless modems.
