Demand to pay less, says MTN
Consumers recently raised concerns that some resellers of airtime vouchers are selling these vouchers at inflated prices.
In response MTN South Africa said that they can confirm that the company is aware of the concerns raised regarding the inflated price of airtime vouchers.
“MTN has investigated the matter and can confirm the following:
– R5 cards are being sold for R5.50
– R10 cards are being sold for R10.50
– R15 cards are being sold for R16”
The cellular operator said that the businesses in question are receiving the MTN airtime vouchers at the agreed wholesale price, but that they continue to sell them at a higher price than that which is printed on the airtime voucher.
“MTN can also confirm that consumers in the townships are willing to pay these amounts instead of searching elsewhere for a better deal. This practice is not uncommon in Eastern Cape townships,” MTN said in a statement.
“The correct price is stipulated on the airtime card – consumers should demand to pay that amount or go elsewhere.”
“MTN cannot prevent business owners from raising the price of the airtime voucher. Through the MTN Zoners situated in emerging market townships around the country, MTN SA has started an education drive to warn consumers of such practices. Consumers can save money by buying airtime at the stipulated price,” said MTN.
“At MTN we regard our customers and their needs as the key reasons for doing business and therefore we aim to meet their needs. MTN does not condone nor does it support the sale of airtime vouchers at a value that is higher than that which is printed on the airtime voucher.”
MTN pointed out that they are working at increasing the supply of the products in the area to assist in making sure that their products are sold at the correct retail price.
