Is MTN over-billing?

Recent information from an MTN customer suggests that the cellular provider may mistakenly overcharge its subscribers for data usage.

According to an MTN SP subscriber he was charged R 429.01 instead of R 45.53, possibly due to a bug in the MTN billing system.

The subscriber highlighted a few issues which raise concerns:

“I checked my available data before using it to make sure it did not go over. I have since been told that these figures given on the telephone are not accurate. I have for the moment ignored this part.”

“The available bytes on a 2GB bundle are 2147483648. I used 2187265659 which is 38Meg over the limit (I should be charged R45.53). The problem seems to be that MTN charge for the entire last transaction which takes you over the limit (in my case 357 Meg when I only had 319 Meg available),” he said.

If this is indeed a bug in the MTN data billing system it could result in subscribers having to fork out hundreds of Rands for data which is actually part of their paid-for data bundle.

MTN was asked for comment on this issue, but did not provide any feedback.

Good news for Vodacom subscribers is that this possible MTN billing irregularity is not a provider-wide problem.

When asked about this problem Vodacom said that their billing is done down to byte level and that if the subscriber exceeds his bundle in a single session, only the portion that falls outside the bundle will be charged at the ‘out-of-bundle’ rate.
