Seeking a savvier beast at new-look Vodacom
Knott-Craig, it seems, wants to leave. But one hopes he takes the macabre guinea pig, which now infests billboards, with him.
Certainly Knott-Craig was instrumental in Vodacom’s rise, but he hasn’t done it for free.
Vodacom doesn’t disclose directors’ pay, but we know Knott-Craig was one of four bosses who shared R74,5m last year, an average of nearly R20m.
Now at Vodacom’s recent results presentation, Knott-Craig gushed over how the youth just loves the creepy meerkat.
But you have to wonder if the 55-year-old CEO earns his big bucks for these pithy insights.
In May, the largest South African group on Facebook’s social network, which boasted 9600 members, was called: “I $@*ing hate the animated meerkat from Vodacom.” Today, it has 14000 members — a 40% growth in weeks.
So if Facebook is a “youth culture” phenomenon, what does Knott-Craig know of this culture?
And should he control a firm that spent R1,1bn on marketing last year?
