Virgin Mobile continues growth
Virgin Mobile celebrated its second birthday today after launching on June 24 2006. Over the past two years the company has signed up just over 500 000 customers and aims to increase this figure to 603 000 by the end of the year.
Virgin Mobile also increased its number of distribution points to around 4 000 and is confident that it can grow this number to 4 690 by the end of 2008.
The company’s average revenue per user (ARPU) of R216 is significantly higher than MTN’s R148.50 or Vodacom’s R121.50, something which is partly due to targeting the higher income market.
Virgin Mobile CEO, Peter Boyd, says that the company is proud to have been the mobile number portability champions in South Africa and that Virgin Mobile remains the only cellular provider with unlimited SMSes and no termination fees.
There are however challenges that remain for the company as the only mobile virtual network operator in South Africa. This includes rolling out more dealerships and overcoming margin pressure.
