MTN upgrades to blame for downtime
MTN subscribers suffered outages on Wednesday in the Johannesburg region. These problems were to blame on upgrades performed on the MTN network.
MTN said that it is currently undertaking an extensive upgrade to improve and enhance the MTN network. “This is the most comprehensive work we have undertaken to date, with an investment of over R7 billion. So far, the process has been seamless and our customers have not been impacted by the work being carried out,” said Tim Lowry, Managing Director of MTN South Africa.
“Unfortunately, we experienced problems with the Randburg switch today and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused as a consequence of our network improvements. We can however assure everybody that the problem has been resolved.”
Lowry said that MTN is in the process of developing an early-warning system to try to give our customers advance warning of where potential problems may occur as a result of the work they are undertaking to improve the network.
“Most importantly, we are trying our utmost to prevent a recurrence of this situation,” concluded Lowry.
