A one trick pony

TYPICALLY, ANY CELLPHONE that I get sent to review comes from one of the big brand manufacturers, such as Nokia or SonyEricsson. So I was interested to get my hands on a Wiki W05 Dual Sim phone.

The W05 is two phones in one, in that you can insert two different SIM cards and have two numbers active at the same time. Unfortunately – apart from a competitive price of R2 600 – that’s the only thing that would recommend this phone over the multitude of others on the market.

Though the Wiki has a large touchscreen – unlike the SonyEricsson I tested recently – its operating system hasn’t been designed to use your finger, so you need to use its stylus for most activities. The operating system is clunky and looks as if it was designed 10 years ago and, compared with every cellphone I’ve seen in recent times, it’s unpleasant to look at.

And the interaction between what you need to do on the screen and what needs to be done with the keyboard is not always clear. The keypad is also a little odd, as it has the 0 to the right of the keyboard – yet another eccentricity you’d have to get used to if you bought this phone.

On the plus side, you do get two batteries and a charger in the box, as well as cable for charging from a USB. That said, I can’t think of any reason why someone who didn’t specifically need its dual SIM function would give it a second look. Compared to the multinational brands it’s so far behind that you’re going to be frustrated at every turn. Give this one-trick pony a miss…
