Voicemail to SMS
Vodacom recently announced its Voicemail2SMS service, delivering voicemail messages to subscribers via SMS.
Voicemail2SMS was initially launched in September 2007 and is now available to all Vodacom contract customers at a monthly subscription fee of R49.
“Voicemail2SMS delivers a voicemail message to the recipient via SMS – allowing you to immediately access your voicemail message without you having to take the time to phone 121 to retrieve and listen to your voicemail messages,” the Vodacom website says.
Voicemail2SMS is powered by Spinvox and enables a voice message received in a mailbox to be converted into an SMS provided that the voice message is in english.
For voice messages to be converted to SMS and a voice message deposited in the customer’s voice mailbox is forwarded to the voice-to-text conversion platform, which converts the message into an SMS through an automated system.
The message recipient will receive a voicemail notification, followed a few seconds later by an SMS displaying the message from the caller.
This new service will be of value to international travelers who will be able to read their voice messages free of charge rather than paying roaming fees to listen to their voicemail-messages.
Vodacom points out that only messages in english can be converted to SMS and advises callers to leave their messages in english when leaving a voice message to a customer who subscribes to Voicemail2SMS.
