Less than 3% of Vodacom staff on strike
Cellular phone group Vodacom ? a joint venture between Telkom and Vodafone ? said on Monday that less than 3% of its workers participated in the strike organised by the Communication Workers Union (CWU).
The strike started on Monday morning.
Vodacom, which has 4,302 workers, said: "Our business and our services were not disrupted in any way".
The working conditions of the staff at Vodacom were acknowledged as some of the best in South Africa, the company said in reference to one of the demands made by the workers.
The union is demanding that it be recognised by the company, but Vodacom said that it reached an agreement with CWU at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration that CWU needed to represent 30% of the workforce to be recognised.
"Vodacom has exercised its right to lock-out Vodacom (Pty) Ltd employees who are members of the Union and are participating in the strike in order to compel such members to adhere to the terms of the 1999 Collective Agreement on organisational rights," said Dot Field, Vodacom's chief communications officer.
