Vodacom: Striking workers broke the rules
According to a Vodacom statement less than 3 % of their 4 302 workforce participated in the strike which started on 2 July 2007. Vodacom further said that they had to approach the Labour Court to address some unlawfull activities.
“Vodacom was compelled to seek an urgent interdict from the Labour Court of South Africa today against the striking members of the CWU for its blocking of the entrance to Vodaworld in Midrand which was in clear breach of the agreed upon picketing rules,” Vodacom said.
“The interdict restrains the CWU striking Vodacom employees from entering or being upon Vodacom’s premises – and from interfering with or obstructing access to Vodacom’s premises in any way.”
Vodacom said that it will continue to exercise it’s right to lock-out Vodacom employees who are members of the Union and who are participating in the strike in order to compel such members to adhere to the terms of the 1999 Collective Agreement on organizational rights.
“It must again be noted that the working conditions of the staff at Vodacom are acknowledged as some of the best in South Africa,” the Vodacom statement concluded.
