The perfect evolution

I CAN NOW SAY that when it comes to upgrading my cellphone early next year I’m going to have a tough time making a decision. Not only will the iPhone be out (we hope) but the range of the E-Series phone that Nokia is currently shipping makes choosing a favourite almost impossible.

The old E65 was one of my favourite cellphones and if I’d received a commission for all of my friends and colleagues who bought one I’d be a rich man by now. The E66 – the follow-up to the E65 – is the perfect evolution of an almost perfect phone.

The phone, which has a sliding form factor, is slightly larger than its predecessor, thanks mostly to a larger screen. Nokia has also replaced the slightly matt finish of the E65 with a shiny silver and grey for the E66, which gives it a much more modern feel. It supports full HSDPA, which makes surfing the Internet on the device a pleasure. And on a recent business trip I used it almost exclusively for reading and replying to emails.

You can set it up to connect to any number of mail servers, including getting push mail from your Exchange server similar to what you’d have on a BlackBerry. It also has an accelerometer built in, so the screen will flip from portrait to landscape mode when you turn the phone, making it easier to read some web pages or emails. In fact, the accelerometer is the only part of the cellphone I found fault with: sometimes it was a little too sensitive and I was left waiting for it to rotate back before I could use it.

However, that’s a minor niggle and doesn’t prevent me from giving it my wholehearted recommendation.
