No work, no calls

Spokesperson for Vodacom Dot Field said employees who were participating in the strike were on a lock-out which meant no work, no pay and no benefits.

"Company email and company sim cards are the property of the company and are business tools," said Field.

She said the actual cellphones were not blocked and the workers were free to insert their own sim cards into the handsets.

Spokesperson for the CWU, Mfanafuthi Sithebe, said the service provider had not favoured Gobodo Forensic Auditors with the complete list of the workforce – that would enable them to do a full list of those belonging to the union.

Field said Vodacom had provided Gobodo with a full list of all their employees.

Both parties were still in dispute over the number of people involved in the strike, after a memorandum was handed over at the headquarters in Midrand on Wednesday.

Vodacom said out of their workforce of 4302 employees, fewer than 120 were striking countrywide. The CWU said 1325 employees embarked on the strike action.
