iPhone pricing comparison

Vodacom launched the Apple iPhone with much fanfare at Vodaworld on September 26.  It was well received by many Apple enthusiasts, but some questions have been raised about the pricing of the device in South Africa.

It is now well known that Apple was heavily involved in setting pricing for the iPhone in South Africa, leaving Vodacom with little room to maneuver.

On the prepaid front, South Africa is significantly more expensive than countries such as New Zealand and Australia. But when it comes to contract rates, South Africa fares better, although local consumers don’t get the same minutes, data or SMSes when comparing similarly-priced packages.

The following tables provide a summary of some pricing options when purchasing the iPhone on contract or prepaid.
