Cell C CTO resigns

Obeid, who is a Lebanese national, leaves Cell C after eight years with the company.  He will relocate back to Lebanon to join his wife and children.

Obeid joined Cell C in 2000 and has held various positions including Executive Manager Network Operations and Maintenance and Executive Manager Service Operations.  He was appointed Chief Technical Officer in August 2006.

Jeffrey Hedberg, Chief Executive Officer of Cell C said Obeid had been instrumental in ensuring that Cell C’s network and technology compared with the best in the world.

“He has played a significant role in ensuring that Cell C is able to offer its customers a reliable and quality network.”

Hedberg thanked Obeid for his contribution to Cell C over the past eight years and wished him great success for his future.

Since its launch in 2001, Cell C has rolled out in excess of 2 200 base stations nationwide and carries over 87% of its own traffic.

Cell C recently migrated its core network to a world-class Huawei core switching network. The new core network is fully 3G ready and aligned with 3G standards. Cell C is currently the only network operator in South Africa with a combined 3G/2G network.

Hedberg said he was confident Cell C will continue to deliver on customer demands as the technical operations of the business were in capable hands.

Steve Boiles, Executive Head: Networks will act as Chief Technical Officer until a new appointment has been made.
